At Great States Construction, our success is built by the hardworking individuals who bring each project to life. This month, we’re proud to spotlight Blake Madson, a superintendent whose leadership, hands-on expertise, and people-first approach help drive our projects forward.

From Small Town Roots to Commercial Construction

Blake’s construction journey began early. At just 16, he spent summers doing grunt work for a local contractor in his hometown. In high school, he gained even more experience working in a welding shop and later in underground sewer and water construction.
As his career progressed, Blake took on new roles—leading crews, building homes, and eventually moving into commercial construction. That path ultimately brought him to Great States Construction.
“Every role I’ve had taught me something new,” Blake says. “It’s been a rewarding journey of learning and growth.”

Why Blake Loves Construction: Variety, Challenge, and Teamwork

For Blake, no two days are the same—and that’s exactly what he loves about the job.
“I’ve worked on apartments, studios, and other commercial projects. The variety keeps it interesting, and working with great subcontractors makes every day rewarding,” he shares.
As a superintendent, Blake thrives in the fast-paced, ever-changing environment. From managing timelines to solving on-site challenges, he finds energy in the day-to-day unpredictability.

Building Relationships Is Just as Important as Building Projects

Blake believes one of the most important parts of being a superintendent is building strong relationships.
“Being a people person is key,” he explains. “Good communication and camaraderie keep a team motivated and on track.”
He works closely with project managers and subcontractors to ensure clear communication, efficient coordination, and successful outcomes—on time and on budget.

Favorite Projects: Red River Human Services & Radio FM Studios

When asked about his favorite projects, two stand out: the Red River Human Services (RRHS) building and the Radio FM studios.
“RRHS was unique—it wasn’t just a building. It served a bigger purpose for the community,” Blake says. “And the Radio FM studios were a fun challenge. Each space had to be designed and built to meet very specific technical needs.”
Blake takes pride in seeing projects come to life from the ground up. Finishing a build and seeing the final product never gets old.

Outside the Job Site: Family, Hunting, and the Outdoors

When he’s not overseeing job sites, Blake finds joy in the outdoors and family time. He enjoys hunting deer and turkey, attending his kids’ activities, and caring for animals on the family’s land.
“Family time and outdoor adventures are my way to recharge,” he says.

Advice for the Next Generation of Superintendents

Blake has simple but powerful advice for anyone interested in a construction career:
“Try everything. Take on different roles, ask questions, and build your communication skills. The more you learn, the better prepared you’ll be.”

Looking Ahead with Great States Construction

Blake is excited about what’s next for Great States Construction—including upcoming Kwik Trip builds and other summer projects.
“It’s awesome to see how much we’ve grown and to be part of that success.”
